Equipment Needed

Here's what you need to be properly equipped to compete for boys high school:

The Crosse: The crosse (lacrosse stick) is made of wood, laminated wood or synthetic material, with a shaped net pocket at the end.
Lengths: The crosse must be an overall length of 40 - 42 inches (short crosse) or 52 - 72 inches (long crosse)

The head of the crosse must be 6.5 - 10 inches wide, except a goalie's crosse which may be 10 - 12 inches wide. The pocket of a crosse shall be deemed illegal if the top surface of a lacrosse ball, when placed in the head of the crosse, is below the bottom edge of the side wall.

***Important Note:  High school players: Your stick will be thrown out of the game and the team will receive a three minute non-releasable penaly for stick violations, specifically if it fails the following test:  The ref takes a stick, puts a ball in the pocket as far as is will go and slowly turns the stick over.  If the ball does not move freely and roll out, it is illegal!  Our high school team incurred a few of these infractions last year.  The coaches will check sticks and not allow the use of illegal sticks.  Unfortunately, manufacturers have gradually pinched the heads of stick over the years, so be careful when you shop.  These rules are only going to get more strict.

The Helmet: A protective helmet, equipped with face mask, chin pad and a cupped four point chin strap fastened to all four hookups, must be worn by all men's players. All helmets and face masks should be NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) approved.  Visors are not permitted.

The Mouthpiece: The mouthpiece must be a highly visible color and is mandatory.  It cannot be taped over and is recommended to be attached to the helmet.

The Glove: All players are required to wear protective gloves. The cutting or altering of gloves is prohibited.

Protective Equipment: All players, with the exception of the goalkeeper, must wear NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) shoulder padsArm pads are required for all players excluding goalies.

Athletic supporters and protective cups are required for all players at all levels.

Rib pads are recommended for High School play but not required.  The goalkeeper is required to wear a throat protector and NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) chest protector, in addition to a helmet, mouthpiece and gloves.

YVL provides goalie throat guards and chest protectors for goalies.  If the goalkeeper would like higher-end equipment they must do so on their own.
